Hi

Hi,

The best thing we did this week was starting our K-Buddies book. I liked it because we are almost done with it. Something that happened this week which I am proud of is how I'm doing in math. I would still like to improve how I am doing in Hebrew. The hardest part of the week was writing this blog post. I hope that next week we finish the K-Buddies book. I would like to compliment Hadass for helping me on the poem I was working on.

Bye,
Jonathan

Hadass's Week

Hi people,

The best thing we did this week was doing poetry night. I liked it because I got to see my friends and because I got to hear other people's ideas of poetry. Something that happened this week which I am proud of is me not getting my name on the board and me having good days. I would still like to improve how I concentrate and how I write. The hardest part of the week was controlling myself when other people were wild. I look forward to using the invisible ink next week in social studies. I would like to compliment jonathan for being nice to me this week.

See ya next time,
Hadass

Our week in review

Dear Blog Readers,

The best thing we did this week was finish MY BROTHER SAM IS DEAD. We liked it because it was a sad but good ending. Something that happened this week which we are proud of is earning ice cream on the Freedom Trail. We would still like to improve how we speak Hebrew. The hardest part of this week was deciding what MY BROTHER SAM IS DEAD assignment we wanted to do. We hope that next week we use invisible ink in social studies. We would like to compliment Hamorah Eliza for being an awesome/amazing teacher.

Passover at MWJDS

Dear Friends of Gefen and Tamar,

We spent the last hour of our school day Thursday celebrating Passover with an in-school model seder. Because third and fourth graders are taking a class with Rav-Hazzan on traditional Jewish foods, they ran the event. Everyone got a mini seder plate and the third and fourth graders punctuated the event by explaining various parts of the seder and the seder plate. Other classes sang songs and contributed in other ways.

It was a really fun afternoon.

Hamorah Janis and I hope that you enjoy your own family Passover seders at home over vacation.

Best,
Hamorah Eliza

School Days

Dear Bloggers,

The best thing that happened this week was special visitors day. I like it because I get to show my cousin my school. Something that happened this week which I am proud of is walking around without hurting myself. I would still like to improve how I walk. The hardest part of the week was getting out of bed. I hope that this week I feel better. I would like to compliment Ryan for being a good cousin.

My Brother Sam is Dead

Shalom Friends,

The best thing we did this week was finishing the book, My Brother Sam is dead. I liked it because it had a character named Sam.  (And it was a great book.) Something that happened this week which I am   proud of is winning handball at recess. I would still like to improve on how I throw. The hardest part of the week was earning a special treat. I hope that next week I win my 2nd baseball game. I would like to compliment Ryan for giving me a high-five.

As Always Stay Cool,
Sam

Poetry night

Dear Wonderful Readers,

The best thing we did this week was poetry night. I liked it because we got to read poetry, saw our art work and hung with friends. Something that happened this week which I am proud of is finishing my math project. I would still like to improve how I spell travel. The hardest part of this week was earning the Ben and Jerry's ice cream when we go to the freedom trail. I hope that next week we will have a fun freedom trail. I would like to compliment Hamorah Eliza for giving us so many cubes.

 Bye Y'all,

Kindergarten Buddies Book!

Dear Friends of Gefen and Tamar,

Yesterday fourth graders and their kindergarten buddies started the final draft of the book they're creating and publishing. The book is about the students' favorite things about MWJDS. It will be printed up in a few weeks and you will all have an opportunity to purchase a copy. I did the same project with last year's fourth graders and it was a huge hit. It came out great. I can't wait to see how this year's comes out.

Here's a picture of the students working on their pages.

MEGS 3 DAY WEEK

HI PEOPLES,

THE BEST THING WE DID THIS WEEK WAS MAKE A CLASS 2048 GAME, A POPULAR COMPUTER/ITHING GAME. I LIKED IT BECAUSE WE DID IT IN NAME ORDER. IT WENT AVIA, BRYCE,  ELIANA S., ELLIAN C., HADASS, JONATHAN, MEG, SAM, ELIZA, CECELEY AND SCOTT. SOMETHING THAT HAPPENED THIS WEEK WHICH I AM PROUD OF IS HAMORAH ELIZA SAYING I AM SUCH A GOOD MATH STUDENT. THE HARDEST PART OF THE WEEK WAS DOING ALL MY CHORES THAT I HAVE TO DO WHEN I'M SO TIRED IN THE MORNING. I HOPE THAT NEXT WEEK WE GO ON THE FREEDOM TRAIL AND GET ICE CREAM, BUT I'M NOT SURE THAT IS ACTUALLY GOING TO HAPPEN. I WOULD LIKE TO COMPLIMENT HAMORAH ELIZA FOR BEING THE BEST TEACHER EVER.

Manicures and Midrash: a Plague Per Nail

Dear Friends of Gefen and Tamar,

Yesterday during lunch fourth grade girls joined fifth, sixth and seventh grade girls for Manicures and Midrash in Hamorah Michelle's room. First we reviewed the ten plagues and then we channeled our creative sides to represent each of the ten plagues on a different nail. It was so fun! We all had a blast. Check out the pictures below.

Hamorah Janis's Weekly Post

This week our special blogger is Maayan:

This week we started animal research.  Every kid was assigned an animal that is endangered.  We will be making power point presentations.

Today we cleaned our room for Passover.

Yesterday we had a seder.  The third and fourth grade hosted the event.

In art we put gold and silver paint on our drawing of our dragons.  It looks really good!

Since it is springtime we have had warmer weather.  We have been playing outside.

Hag sameach,
Maayan

Hamorah Janis:

I hope that you all have a wonderful Passover.

Tamar's Biographies Project

Dear Friends of Gefen and Tamar,

Tamar students have just begun a new unit in Writing Workshop on biographies. They are writing biographies about one another. Hadass is writing about Bryce, Bryce is writing about Sam, Sam is writing about Avia, Avia is writing about Eliana S, Eliana S is writing about Elliana C, Elliana C is writing about Jonathan, Jonathan is writing about Meg, and Meg is writing about Hadass.

On Monday we went over interview techniques. We brainstormed together and then each student came up with a list of interview questions for his/her interviewees.

On Wednesday we started interviewing! I told students that real journalists take notes on what their interviewees are saying as they interview, but that some of them also record the interview as a safety net. Since it is Tamar's first time doing this, the students do not have to worry about taking notes at all. Instead, they each just need to focus on asking the right questions and follow-up questions. We are recording the interviews on ipads so that students can go back and watch the interviews and take notes on them at that time. Here are a few pictures from our first round of interviews.

Sam and Avia have a laugh during their interview

Bryce and Hadass smile for the camera before they begin their interview

The students are SO EXCITED about this project. It's great to see their enthusiasm. Ask your Tamar student how the interview process is going.

Hamorah Eliza

MWJDS Science Fair 2014

Dear Friends of Gefen and Tamar,

We had a fabulous MWJDS Science Fair yesterday evening. Fourth Graders broke into groups to do 3 experiments. Avia, Eliana S. and Hadass did "The Music Test," wherein they set out to see if people's heart rates are affected by listening to scary music. Meg and Elliana C. tested various materials to determine which made the best insulation for a solar oven. And Bryce, Sam and Jonathan experimented with green m&ms and green skittles to see if the dye used to color them is the same for the candies.

See photos below from this special event.
Meg says, "Tadaaaaaah!"

Hadass showcases "The Music Test" for all to see

Eliana S and Avia showcase "The Music Test" display board

Jonathan shows us "Candy Chromatography"

Elliana C. explains her experiment to visitor, Amanda M.
Sam, Bryce and Jonathan field some tough questions from Mr. Merlyn about their project

Unlike in years past, the work on science fair projects was done entirely in school this year. It was a different format and I believe it was a success. Ask your children what they think.

Best,
Hamorah Eliza

Hamorah Janis's Weekly Post

This week our special blogger is Talia:

This week we chose our animal studies from 1-3.  Next week we will find out what animal we are going to be studying.

Yesterday we had our Science Fair!  This year we were put into groups and worked with our groups on our projects.

Gefen had four different groups they were:
  • Back and Forth - Talia, Maayan, and Hana
  • Potato Battery - Aiden, Justin, and Nate
  • Lava Lamp - Alyssa, Amanda, and Amanda
  • Glowing Water - Jake and Melanie
After the Science Fair some of us went to Papa Gino’s.  There were a lot of people from our school.

Last week we had the Wax Museum.  There were a lot of people who came to watch us act as a famous person from Massachusetts.  It was fun to be able to answer all the questions.

Message from Hamorah Janis:

I hope that you all have a wonderful and restful shabbat!

Making Matzoh

Dear Friends of Gefen and Tamar,

On Monday students in grades K through 4 went to the Chabad Center of Natick to make motzah. It was an awesome trip. First students watched a short (15 minute) film about how matzoh is made. Then they went through the process of making flour, adding water to turn it into dough, flattening it and puncturing it with a fork to make the small holes we commonly see in matzoh. In order for the matzoh to be kosher for Passover, the time from when water is added to the flour until the time when the matzoh comes out of the oven must be less than or equal to 18 minutes. We timed ourselves and made it!

While the matzoh was cooking, students made sand art, which was appropriate because when Jews travelled in the desert, there was (of course) a lot of sand on the ground.

When the matzoh was ready we ate it with grape juice. The whole experience was really cool. Ask your child to tell you more about the experience.
