Gefen’s last blog for this school year 2013-2014

Some of the children in the class have one last thing to contribute!

Alyssa - I liked watching Mary Poppins and Hugo.

Amanda M. - Today was our last all school tefillah and I enjoyed having Hamorah Janis as my teacher.

Hana - I am excited to go to the new Legoland on Monday.

Talia - I liked Animal Research and watching Hugo.

Nate - I am excited because this summer I am going to Florida! 

Aiden - I really liked gym because it is so much fun.  I like soccer.

Maayan - I am excited to see my grandma come from Israel.

Melanie - I can’t wait for summer.  I liked art with Hamorah Patty.

Jacob - I liked doing the Animal Reaseach project because my animal was a gorilla.

Justin - I liked doing spelling because I am really good at it.

Hamorah Janis - I would like to thank you for letting me spend every school day with your most precious possessions.  I loved coming to work everyday!

This week our special blogger is Amanda S.:

We did our animal research presentation.  It was fun because we got to make a power point presentation for the first time.  

We had hot lunch this week and the food was yummy.  I like the pizza the most!

Gefen finished reading the Dick King-Smith books and made a cube book report.

The girls in Gefen had a lunch bunch with Hamorah Dalia.  We watched an Israeli television program called Israeli Idol.  It is fun to watch because we get to see people trying out and hear the judges vote for the best singer. 

We got to read from the torah which was fun because it was the first time for many of us.  Next Friday we get to read for everyone!

Note from Hamorah Janis:

I hope that you all have a wonderful and safe long weekend.  

Our field trip to the zoo is next Tuesday!  Please be sure your child arrives on time that day, since the bus leaves promptly at 8:40.

Some of you asked for a copy of the Cereal Box Commercials.  I will have them for you next week!

Gefen News - this weeks bloggers are Maayan and Talia

This week most of us finished our power point presentations.  There are coming along great.  We included a map, tons of pictures, information, and poems.  May 22 will be the day that we present them to you, our parents.  It will start at 8:30 a.m.  The presentation will be amazing!

We started 3 new books by Dick King-Smith.  All of the books are about animals.  Hamorah Janis will be reading a book called Harry’s Mad also by Dick King-Smith.  The books are called:  The Golden Goose, The Invisible Dog, and The Mouse Called Wolf.

Next week Atid will be showing us how to create robots using Legos.

Hamorah Janis is reading the book Hugo Cabret. We will be watching the movie when we are done with the book.

This week our special blogger is Maayan:

This week we started animal research.  Every kid was assigned an animal that is endangered.  We will be making power point presentations.  

Today we cleaned our room for Passover.  

Yesterday we had a seder.  The third and fourth grade hosted the event.  

In art we put gold and silver paint on our drawing of our dragons.  It looks really good!

Since it is springtime we have had warmer weather.  We have been playing outside.

This week our special blogger is Talia:

This week we chose our animal studies from 1-3.  Next week we will find out what animal we are going to be studying.

Yesterday we had our Science Fair!  This year we were put into groups and worked with our groups on our projects.

  

Gefen had four different groups they were: 

• Back and Forth - Talia, Maayan, and Hana
• Potato Battery - Aiden, Justin, and Nate
• Lava Lamp - Alyssa, Amanda, and Amanda
• Glowing Water - Jake and Melanie

After the Science Fair some of us went to Papa Gino’s.  There were a lot of people from our school.

Last week we had the Wax Museum.  There were a lot of people who came to watch us act as a famous person from Massachusetts.  It was fun to be able to answer all the questions.

Our blogger from our class for this week is Amanda S.:

This week we worked on Wax Museum.  We studied about our person then we wrote the information on cards. 

We went to the cafeteria this morning and chose a science experiment for the Science Fair.  Our group is working on Lava Lamps!

This week we started to read a mystery called Sammy Keyes and The Hollywood Mummy.    We have read one chapter so far and we learned that Sammy Keyes took a trip to Hollywood with Marissa.

This Weeks Blogger is Talia:

Our class has raised $132.01 total.   Thanks for helping our class raise this money.

We got our Wax Museum people this week.  When we come back from vacation we will be busy researching about our people.

In science we saw how different materials reflected, transmitted, or absorbed light.

Then we made a chart that said what each material did.

Last week in writing we started to write our stories on the computers some of us finished this week.

In reading we finished our biographies on Louis Braille and Helen Keller who were both blind.

A note from Hamorah Janis:

I wanted to send all of the biographies home this week.  Unfortunately, Barnes and Noble could not get every book for us.  They are on order and hopefully they will be here when we return from vacation.  If the books arrive next week, I will bring them to your homes.  I will send an email letting you know.   You could also look in your local library or online.

This week’s special blogger is Jake:

This week in social studies we learned about why we still learn about the Pilgrims.  They felt that good manners were very important so this became a custom.  We still play games that the children played.  We play Leapfrog and Hopscotch.

In art we did Mandela’s, we made one big circle and you put a dot inside.  It will become a design.

We started talking about the Wax Museum.  We found out whom we are going to be learning about.  I am excited about the Wax Museum, which takes place on March 27.  Next week we will be getting the biographies.

This week's special Blogger is Hana from the Gefen class.  Here are this weeks events:

Today we did the commercials for the Frindle Book Report.  We went into the library and Hamorah Janis’ husband filmed us. 

We had art and we started landscape pictures.  First we sketched the picture using pencils and next we are going to use water colors and salt.

We only had 3 days of school this week but we got a lot done.

In Hebrew we planted all different kinds of flowers.  They are starting to grow!

In Fine Arts we are practicing the play Rumplestiltskin.

We played games with Hamorah Sigilit.

Dear Gefen Parents,

This week our special Blog person is Maayan.

We did more history pockets in social studies.  We learned about how the Pilgrims were strict parents.   They wanted their children to have manners at the table.  Two examples are:  Stuff not thy mouth to fill thy cheeks and Sing not, hum not, wriggle not. 

We are writing "Realistic Fiction" stories during writing.  We were inspired by a story that Hamorah Janis read before we decided what to write.  The book is called Grandpa's Teeth, it is about a grandpa that blames everyone for stealing his fake teeth.  This was a good way for us to start our new stories.

We are almost finished reading Frindle.  Hopefully, we will finish next week.

We took part in the "Hour of Code" during science this week.  We did a game with Angry Bird where we had to move the bird to the pig using lines of code.

We wish everyone a nice shabbat.  Stay safe during the snow storm.

Hello Gefen Parents this week Amanda Mintz is the reporter.

Here is this weeks news from the Gefen class:

We are publishing our stories, we will be starting new narratives next week.

We are still reading Frindle it's a good book. We are up to chapter eight in the book,  Nick made a new word for pen, "Frindle."

We are taking home our keeping rooms.  A keeping room is something that the Pilgrims used to live in.

Today we had a spelling test in our class room.  We have spelling tests every Friday.

Dear Tamar parents,

The best thing we did this week was learning a song in hebrew.

I liked it because i like singing.

Something that happened this week which I am proud of is learning some more spanish.

I would still like to improve how I react.

The hardest part of the week was not getting angry at people I don't like.

I would like to compliment Hamorah Eliza for being a great teacher this week.

Here are some highlights from the third grade classroom:

This week the class almost finished their animal project in art.  First they drew their animal, then they cut them out and colored them.  The last step was to glue them onto paper.  Melanie decided to draw a turtle!

Melanie and all of the other students received their own dictionary from the Rotary Club.  Every third grade student in this area receives a dictionary from this philanthropic organization.  In addition to definitions there are maps, a list of all of the presidents, and the longest word in the world.

Dear Gefen Parents,

This week Amanda S. is our blog reporter.

Here are some of the highlights from our week (11/3-11/8):

We read from our new book called Frindle, by Andrew Clements.  It is a cool book about a boy named Nick who is a troublemaker, he liked to play tricks on his teachers.  His newest teacher figured out very quickly that he is up to no good.

We went to Plimoth and one of the things we saw was a Wetu.  This is where the Wampanoag lived,  it has a big hole in the roof.  We also got to watch a movie.  The weather was really nice!  Many thanks to Dov and Robin for coming with us.

Gefen's Weekly News

Every week we will have a special blogger to report the highlights in the Gefen class.  This week Nate will be the blogger.

Here's the news:  In social studies we finished the unit on Massachusetts and started to learn about the Wampanoag Tribe.  They got everything they needed to live from nature.  They got their food from the soil and the boats they used were made from tree trunks.

A highlight of the week was when we celebrated Nathan Nichols' Bar Mitzvah.  We would like to wish the whole family a hearty mazel tov!

Gefen's Weekly News

Hello Gefen Parents,

This week the students have been learning map skills and facts about Massachusetts.  Next week we will begin to learn about the Wampanoags and Pilgrims.

I have planned a trip for the third grade students to visit Plimoth Plantation on November 6, 2013.  We will need chaperones/drivers to accompany us on our trip.

I will be sending emails regarding this fun trip with important information regarding lunches, dress, etc.

Dear Gefen Parents,

This morning we had a wonderful all school tefillah and the Gefen students led the Ashrei.

We had a busy week so the students wanted to share some of their reflections and highlights:

Alyssa - "I like math because we are using flashcards."

Amanda M - "Math is fun because I like doing multiplication."

Justin - "I like math because I am using my brain."

Nate - "During recess I like playing football."

Aiden - "I liked reading, Weird But True, during DEAR time."

Amada - I liked writing in our journals about a family tradition."

Jake - "I liked Hebrew this week because we got to play games."

Talia - "I liked reading and writing!"

Maayan - "I like our read aloud.  The book is called, The Thing About Georgie."

Hamorah Janis - "I loved the fact that we had a full week of school and accomplished many things this week!"

This Gefen class has been busy this week.  They began their first book called Molly's Pilgrim during the literacy block.  I demonstrated how the children should read with their buddies and then they worked on activities to check for comprehension of the text.

The first math unit will focus on multiplication.  They will also be working on clock and weather activities.
